When used in the context of sports, camaraderie usually describes the unification and closeness of teammates. However the term often stretches beyond the field and into the administration. The Rebel leadership will all soon be brought closer with a new centralized home.

Continuing the trend of athletics facility growth that has occurred under Pete Boone, the university is set to open the newly constructed Athletics Administration Building in October. The administration will have the benefit of a state-of-the-art facility, which has been under construction since August 2006.

"We are excited about it because Athletics Administration has been really fragmented in terms of location, but now all of our departments will be together," said John Hartwell, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Finance. "In terms of the administration, this building will pull all of our staff together within a block radius. "It will help us not only through a managerial viewpoint, but a camaraderie standpoint as well. Staff members that would previously only see each other once a month in a meeting will now be working together every day." The building is a $6 million project that athletics will have to pay over the next two decades. Although the financial obligations appear strenuous, Hartwell alluded that the university has budgeted the project proficiently. "The project was financed by a bond issue that athletics will pay out over the next 20 years," he said. "It will be paid back through the regular operations of the athletics department. Our total budget for the fiscal year of 2008 is just over $34 million and almost $4 million of that is in debt services." Some of the amenities include spacious offices for all of the Rebel support staffs, an advanced video production area and an interactive lobby that allows alumni and fans to enjoy an enhanced gameday experience. "For those walking through our lobby, the new facility will make it nice for our alumni and fans to experience new technology that will allow them to get a quick overview of both history and current events in Ole Miss Athletics," said Hartwell. "There will be flat screen plasmas with rolling highlight films and an interactive lobby that will enhance our fans' experience at athletics events. It will be very user-friendly." Formerly the John White Building and home of the university Physical Plant, the Athletics Administration Building is conveniently located next to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and other athletics facilities, which will permit administrators to maximize their time. "The building will put us close to our athletics venues," Hartwell said. "Obviously football is one of our more profitable venues and draws the most people. Right when you step out of the office, you are met by the north end zone and the Starnes Athletic Center. The location will be very beneficial towards our everyday operations." Hartwell further added that the construction will pay dividends for student-athletes. "With the construction of the FedEx Academic Support Center and now our administration building, current and future student-athletes will have all the administrative resources in addition to the athletics facilities needed to succeed while attending Ole Miss," he said.

With key personnel all under one roof, the Athletics Administration Building will provide a much needed cohesiveness to the everyday operation of the university as it strives to achieve its overall goal for success in athletics.
