8/23/2007 | Track and Field

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss track and field All-American Brittney Reese will compete in the 2007 IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships August 25-September 2 in Osaka, Japan.

Reese, a two-time SEC champion in the long jump, earned the right to represent the United States after finishing second at the AT&T USA Track and Field Championships in June. Reese finished with mark of 21-10.75. She finished runner-up to professional Grace Upshaw who turned in a mark of 22-01.00.

“This is the top achievement in our sport,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. “We are very excited for her to earn this opportunity in her first year. She had an outstanding collegiate season and this is a great finish. The fact that it is a different culture will be a great learning experience for her.”

The long jump competition begins on Monday with the preliminaries and concludes on Tuesday with the finals.

Reese is the reigning SEC Field Athlete of the Year. She finished second in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, picking up her second All-America honor of the Year. She also placed third in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She was also honored as the NCAA Division I South Region's Women's Indoor Field Co-Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
