Rebels Read to Local Elementary Schools

9/19/2007 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. -- Ole Miss student-athletes took time out to read and visit with students at Oxford Elementary and Lafayette Upper and Lower Elementary schools last week as part of the "Reading with the Rebels" program.

Thomas Tillman, Principal at Lafayette Upper Elementary, thanked Ole Miss for allowing its student-athletes to help the children.

"This program is a tremendous asset to our instructional program," said Tillman.

"Reading with the Rebels" is designed to give student-athletes an opportunity to share the importance of reading with local elementary students. Members of the men's basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, softball, track and field and rifle teams volunteered to assist with the program.

"Reading with the Rebels" is one of the activities coordinated by the Ole Miss Athletics Department's "Rebel Ready" program. The mission of the "Rebel Ready" program is to prepare student athletes for success in college and beyond. Programs such as "Reading with the Rebels" assist with developing student-athletes into well-rounded citizens.
