Ole Miss Enjoys Successful Canned Food Drive
9/26/2007 | Athletics
OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss student-athletes collected approximately 4,500 pounds of canned goods last week as part of their successful efforts in the Southeastern Conference canned food drive.
The Ole Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Council wishes to thank all those that supported the "Together We CAN Drive" program, which saw all 12 SEC schools gather canned food in their respective communities.
"Student-athletes spend four or five years of their lives in the communities of their respective institutions, so to develop and carry out the canned food drive says a lot about the character of the student-athlete in the SEC and Ole Miss," said Senior Associate Athletics Director Lynnette Johnson, who serves as the advisor of SAAC.
Rebel student-Athletes collected canned goods in Oxford at Larson's Big Star, Kroger, Wal-Mart and on campus. Ole Miss athletics department staff also amassed items, and fans attending Ed Orgeron's weekly radio show donated money that was used to purchase items. In addition, cans were accepted as admission to last weekend's home volleyball and soccer matches.
"All donations assist us with our mission in this community," said Ann O'Dell of the Oxford Pantry, which was the beneficiary of the hard work of the Rebel student-athletes, staff and fans.
The SEC "Together We CAN Drive" program concludes Sept. 30, at which time all schools will submit their total weight donated and the league office will make a general announcement.
