Four Rebels Named Top Prospects From Summer Leagues

9/4/2007 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Several members of the Ole Miss baseball team were named as top professional prospects by Baseball America and Perfect Game, the organizations announced recently.

Right-handers Wade Broyles and Justin Cryer were selected as top prospects from their summer leagues by both organizations, while junior infielder Evan Button and junior outfielder Michael Guerrero were both selected as top prospects by Perfect Game.

Cryer and Broyles spent the summer with the Thomasville Hi-Toms in the Coastal Plain League and helped lead the Hi-Toms to the league title for the second straight season. Cryer was named as the ninth-rated prospect for the CPL by Baseball America, while Broyles was rated as the 10th-best prospect in the league. Perfect Game rated Cryer as the eighth-best prospect while Broyles maintained his ranking in the 10th spot.

Cryer did not post a decision in his time on the mound as a setup man for the HiToms, but was effective in that role as he posted a 0.75 ERA in his 14 appearances. He struck out 31 and walked only six in 24.0 innings of work. Broyles was selected as a CPL All-Star as he went 6-0 on the summer with a 0.24 ERA. He struck out 57 in his 38.0 innings of work for Thomasville.

Guerrero and Button received recognition from Perfect Game as well as the organization ranked them as two of the top prospects in the Great Lakes League over the summer. Guerrero was rated as the No. 11 prospect from the summer league, while Button was rated as the No. 14 prospect.

Button turned in a solid summer with the Delaware Cows alongside Guerrero as the junior shortstop hit .288 with a home run and eight RBI while adding 10 steals. Guerrero joined the Cows late in the summer season, but hit .500 with a home run and 10 RBI during his time with Delaware.
