Rebels Take Seventh At UTC PowerAde Invitational

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (September 7, 2007) In the opening meet of the season, both the Ole Miss men’s and women’s cross country teams raced to a seventh place finish Friday afternoon at the UTC PowerAde Invitational at the Moccasin Bend Race Course. 

 

Georgia Tech claimed the title in the women’s race, while SEC foe Auburn laid claim to the title in the men’s race.

 

Rebel senior Samantha Mazer finished in the top spot for Ole Miss as she recorded a 24th place finish with a time of 12:18.  Not far behind, freshman Allison Kneip earned a 31st place finish with her time of 12:40.  Fellow freshman Julie Little finished just three seconds behind with a time of 12:43 to collect a 33rd place finish.

 

Junior Lindsay Doucett tallied a 37th overall finish and a fourth place finish on the team with her time of 12:57.  Rounding out the Rebels’ top-five finishers, junior Kirby Patterson took 39th place with a time of 13:06. 

 

On the men’s side, freshman Jephtah Kenei was the Ole Miss top finisher as he earned a 16th place overall finish with a time of 15:55.  Seconds behind, sophomore Gabriel Ngwiri crossed the finish line in a time of 15:59 to take 18th place.  Junior Seth Conerly finished third for the Rebels and 35th overall with his time of 16:53. 

 

Freshman, and Oxford, Miss., native Ty Gillespie recorded a 40th place finish with a time of 17:18.  Sophomore Chad Berry finished fifth on the team and 58th overall with his time of 18:45. 

 

“It was good to get a race under our belt,” head coach Joe Walker said.  “Now we are looking forward to next week’s race at Alabama.” 

 

Ole Miss returns to action Sept. 14 at 9:00 a.m. when the Rebels travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take part in the Alabama Invitational.
