Ole Miss Cheerleaders Reach National Finals

1/21/2008 | Athletics

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Ole Miss Cheerleaders reached the final round of the Universal Cheer Association National Championships Sunday at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.

Appearing in the competition for the first time in 15 years, Ole Miss turned in a strong performance in Saturday’s UCA/UDA semifinals to advance to the finals, where the squad earned a 14th-place finish.

“We were so excited to make it to finals,” said Amanda Hoppert, Ole Miss’ Coordinator or Spirit Groups. “It was one of our goals when we decided we wanted to compete. We had a great week of practice leading up to the championships, and we knew we could hit our routine.”

The Southeastern Conference was represented by six teams in the finals including Kentucky, who won its record 16th title. Tennessee finished second while Alabama took home fifth place. LSU and Mississippi State also joined Ole Miss on Sunday.

“We are in the most competitive division so we knew we had our work cut out for us,” Hoppert said. “We went out and hit a clean routine and were happy with that. Making it to the finals made it even nicer.”
