Rebels Rally To Claim 3-1 Win Over Auburn
10/24/2008 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. Sophomore middle blocker Miranda Kitts led a balanced attack on Friday night as Ole Miss (10-10, 6-5 SEC) rallied to defeat Auburn (5-17, 0-11 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17) at the Gillom Sports Center.
Kitts tallied 12 kills and hit .417 on the night while also coming up with six blocks for the Rebels. Kitts was 12-for-24 with only two errors in the match. She led a balanced attack as freshman outside hitter Katie Norris added 12 kills and freshman middle blocker Regina Thomas added 10 kills.
Allison Weber led the defensive effort for Ole Miss with 13 digs, while Catherine Heck added 10 digs on the night.
Jessica Glover led the Auburn offense with a match-high 15 kills and 14 digs.
"Miranda had another excellent performance tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It's been great to see her develop a repertoire of shots that have helped her be successful.
"Auburn is a team that is hungry for a win and is well coached. We gave them too many errors early and they gained some confidence in that first game. We flipped things on them a little in the second game and made them have to step up a notch and that caused some problems for them. It was a good win for us."
The first set opened with the Tigers in control as Auburn moved out to an early 9-5 lead on the Rebels before Ole Miss would call a timeout. The Rebels would rally from there, tying the match three times from there before claiming the lead at 17-16, but the lead was short lived as Auburn surged back in front on the way to a 25-22 win in the first set.
The second set again saw Auburn jump on the Rebels early, opening up a 7-1 lead on the home team before Ole Miss would put together a run and tie the match at 11 on a red card on Auburn head coach Wade Benson. The Rebels opened up a five-point lead from there before going on to close out the set 25-22 and even the match at a set each.
The third set saw the Rebels take control early and storm out to a 7-1 lead, turning the tables on the Tigers. Auburn would cut the lead to four, but get no closer as Ole Miss would use another run to push back out to a nine-point lead at 18-9. The Rebels went on to close out the set 25-17 and take the lead in the match.
The fourth set was more of the same as Ole Miss pushed out to a 13-7 lead, but saw the Tigers close to within one at 13-12 behind the serving of Sara Shanks. But the Rebels responded, pushing back out to the lead before claiming the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
Ole Miss will have the rest of the weekend off after picking up a win over Arkansas on Wednesday night earlier this week. The Rebels will return to action on Friday, October 31, when Ole Miss will travel to take on ninth-ranked Florida at the O'Connell Center.
