Rebels Rebound With 3-0 Win Over Georgia

10/5/2008 | Volleyball

ATHENS, Ga. Ole Miss (7-7, 3-2 SEC) got 13 kills from freshman Katie Norris and 12 kills from senior Emily Jones on Sunday as the Rebels rebounded to close out the weekend with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 28-26) win over Georgia (8-9, 1-5 SEC) in Athens.

Norris and Jones led the way with kills, while sophomore middle blocker Miranda Kitts added 10 kills and hit .529 for the match. Allison Weber added 23 digs to lead the defensive effort on the afternoon, while Caitlin Keefe added a kill and two blocks as she stepped up to fill the place of Caitlin Weiss who did not play in the match due to an injury.

"I'm very proud of the team and the way they rebounded and regrouped as a team after Friday night," Getzin said. "I credit this to the seniors and the leadership they provide. Allison Weber had an outstanding day and really stepped up when we needed her."

"Caitlin Keefe has worked hard for an opportunity and one presented itself. She did a real good job of coming in and replacing Caitlin Weiss on the right side. That's what being part of a team is all about. She has not had a lot of opportunities yet, but has shown she can step up and play at this level."

The Rebels stormed out to the early lead in the first set, pushing out to as much as a six point advantage only to see the Bulldogs close the gap to one point at 19-18. But Ole Miss showed determination, grabbing the next two points on kills from Kitts and Jones to put the Rebels in front for good. Ole Miss won the first set 25-21.

The second set again saw the Rebels jump out to an early lead on the hosting Bulldogs. Ole Miss would build a five point lead only to see Georgia cut the lead back to two at 18-16. The Bulldogs would come no closer, however, as Ole Miss held on down the stretch to take the second set 25-23.

Georgia reversed the trend early in the third set, taking a quick lead that swelled out to as much as five points. The Bulldogs held that advantage for a while, but the Rebels began to chip away at the lead before tying the set at 23. A service ace from Allison Weber pushed the Rebels to their first lead of the set at match point before the Rebels claimed the win 28-26.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when the Rebels play host to Mississippi State at 7 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center on campus of the University of Mississippi.
