Danielle Johnson Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

10/6/2008 | Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. After helping Ole Miss to a pair of road victories at Auburn and Alabama, junior defender Danielle Johnson was named SEC Soccer’s Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

A two-time All-SEC pick from Baton Rouge, La., Johnson played a big role in helping Ole Miss vault into first place in the SEC West with a 3-1 win at Auburn and 2-1 victory at Alabama. Playing center back, she helped limit the division foes to one goal each, while she also collected the game-winning goal against the Crimson Tide with a header off a Mallory Coleman free kick.

The Rebels limited Auburn to just five shot attempts on Friday, while on Sunday Johnson made her presence known in the second half by winning several balls on long crosses into the box during Alabama’s comeback attempt. She has started and played every minute of every match this season and has helped Ole Miss give up just two goals during its current three-game league winning streak.

It is the first weekly honor for a Rebel this season, while Johnson receives player of the week accolades for the second time in her career.

Ole Miss faces another tough task on the road with the SEC East’s top two squads this weekend. The Rebels visit No. 10 Florida on Friday before making the trip to South Carolina on Sunday.
