Rebels Fall To Alabama 3-0 On The Road

11/14/2008 | Volleyball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Katie Norris put down 13 kills and Emily Jones added 10 kills on the night, but it wasn't enough to get the Rebels a win as Ole Miss (11-14, 7-9 SEC) fell to Alabama (14-11, 7-9 SEC) on the road by a score of 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 24-26).

Norris and Jones were the only two players to reach double digits for the Rebels offensively. Allison Weber led the defensive effort for Ole Miss as she came up with 11 digs to go along with 10 digs from Morgan Springer.

With the loss, Alabama pulls even with the Rebels in the Western Division race.

"We have to make plays at crucial times in a match and that's what it came down to tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Alabama played a great match and made key plays when they needed to. We have to regroup and come out and play hard at Mississippi State."

The two teams traded scores to open the first set before the Rebels pulled out to a three-point lead on the Crimson Tide 9-6. The lead disappeared quickly, however, as Alabama used a 10-2 run to push out to a 16-11 lead on the Rebels. Ole Miss cut it to one with a run to close to 19-18, but Alabama held the Rebels off down the stretch to take the set 25-20.

Alabama took the lead with the first score of the second set and never trailed from there as the Crimson Tide took a two set lead heading into the break. The Rebels held a 9-8 lead early, but Alabama took the lead again with a quick burst. Ole Miss kept it close throughout, but could never claim the lead again as Alabama took the second set 25-20.

The Rebels turned the tables on the Crimson Tide in the third set early, taking the lead off the first point and controlling the frame for a large percentage of the contest. Ole Miss pushed ahead 24-21 but couldn't close the deal as the Crimson Tide rattled off five straight points to take the set 26-24 and claim the match.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels take on in-state rival Mississippi State at 1:30 p.m. at the Newell-Grissom Building on campus at Mississippi State University.
