Rebels Sweep Mississippi State With 3-0 Win
11/16/2008 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. The Rebel volleyball team got back on the winning track Sunday as Ole Miss (12-14, 8-9 SEC) took down rival Mississippi State (6-22, 1-16 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18).
The win gave the Rebels a season sweep over the Bulldogs and was the first win for Ole Miss in Starkville since the 2003 season.Freshman outside hitter Katie Norris led the Rebel offense on the afternoon with 14 kills, while junior right side Caitlin Weiss added 12 kills on the afternoon. Morgan Springer led the defense for the Rebels as she came up with 12 digs to go along with 11 digs from both Allison Weber and Emily Kvitle.
"It's always great to beat Mississippi State. We had a solid performance and Katie Norris continues to improve with each match. One of the big things is it's great to get a little bit healthier as well. We hadn't won down here in a couple of years and it was good to come in, win in three sets and head back home."
The Rebels fell behind early in the first set as Mississippi State pushed out to a 6-2 lead, but Ole Miss got quick kills from Emily Jones to pull even with the Bulldogs before surging ahead by nine at 15-6. Ole Miss never looked back from there, pushing out to claim the first set 25-19.
Ole Miss took the early lead in the second set, moving out in front of the Bulldogs by four at 8-4 and never looked back from there. Mississippi State cut the lead to one at 9-8, but the Rebels pushed back ahead held the lead down the stretch. The Bulldogs cut the lead to one at 24-23, but Ole Miss claimed the second set 25-23.
The Rebels claimed the win with a 25-18 victory in the third set of the match. Again Ole Miss pushed out to a three-point lead early in the frame only to see the Bulldogs cut the gap to within one at 13-12. And yet again, Ole Miss pulled back in front as Katie Norris put down a kill to start another Rebel run that led to an Ole Miss win.
Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when the Rebels host Georgia in the final home weekend of the season. The Rebels and Bulldogs will take the court for a 7 p.m. match at the Gillom Sports Center on campus at the University of Mississippi.
