Rebels Fall To Gamecocks 3-1 To Close Out Weekend
11/2/2008 | Volleyball
COLUMBIA, S.C. Freshman outside hitter Katie Norris tied her career-high with 19 kills on Sunday, but it wasn't enough to push the Rebels to a win as Ole Miss (10-12, 6-7 SEC) dropped a tight contest with South Carolina (18-6, 9-5 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 28-30, 19-25).
The loss snapped a four-match win streak by the Rebels over the Gamecocks and forced a split in the season series.
Norris was the only Rebel to reach double digits on the afternoon while sophomore middle blocker Miranda Kitts came up with nine kills and hit .400 for the match. Emily Jones came up with a career-high 18 digs on the afternoon to lead the defensive effort for the Rebels.
"We're going to have to serve and pass better if we want to win on the road," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It's tough to win in the SEC on the road. We're going to have to come home and take care of business there if we want to get back on track."
The first set was a tight contest from the start, with the Rebels taking an early 6-3 lead before South Carolina would close the gap and force a back-and-forth scoring battle. With the score tied at 22, the Rebels took control of things with a kill from Miranda Kitts followed by a pair of blocks on consecutive plays from Kitts and Kieckhaefer to claim the first set 25-22.
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early lead in the second set, going up 10-3 on the Rebels before Ole Miss would call a timeout. The Rebels would never recovers as South Carolina held onto the advantage the rest of the way, closing out the second set 25-19 to tie the match at a set each.
South Carolina again jumped out to the early lead in the third set, pushing ahead of the Rebels 8-3. Ole Miss fought back, however, tying the set at 10 before the squads would begin trading scores down the stretch. The back and forth battle continued before South Carolina claimed the third set 30-28. Ole Miss failed to convert on two set points after holding a 25-24 lead, but fought off two set points of their own before the Gamecocks converted for the win.
The fourth set was another tight contest from the beginning with the Rebels holding a slight edge through the early stages. But the Gamecocks put together another rally, going up two at 13-11 and holding the advantage down the stretch. South Carolina claimed the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.
Ole Miss will return to action next weekend when the Rebels return home to host No. 22 Kentucky and Tennessee in weekend action. Ole Miss will face-off against the nationally-ranked Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Gillom Sports Center on campus.
