Rebels Post Strong Showing At ASU Kickoff Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. The Ole Miss track and field team opened the 2008-09 season with six individual titles and 11 other top-five finishes Saturday afternoon at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic. 

 

On the women’s side, sophomore LaJada Baldwin posted a time of 7.11 in the 55 meters en route to a second place finish.  Baldwin also finished in second place in the 400 meters with a mark of 55.73. 

 

Freshman Kristin Bridges finished in third place with her time of 7.12.  Bridges went on to claim the individual title in the 200 meters as she posted a time of 25.19.  Also in the 200 meters, junior Jasmine Dacus turned in a fourth place showing as she posted a time of 25.66.  Dacus also took fourth place in the 400 meters with a time of 58.00. 

 

Freshman Aria Gaines had an outstanding day in the jumps as she finished in first place in the triple jump by recording the fifth best distance in school history with a mark of 39-11.25.  Gaines also took second place in the long jump with a distance of 18-11.25. 

 

Sophomore Juliana Smith set a new school record in the weight throw with a distance of 60-01.00 en route to an individual title in the event.  Her mark surpasses the previous school record distance of 58-04.00 set by Davina Orieukwu in 2007. 

 

Christopher Bush led the way on the men’s side for the Rebels in sprints by finishing first in the 400 meters with a time of 48.73.  Bush finished in third place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.99.  Freshman Keith Brown took second in the 55 meters with a time of 6.42, while finishing sixth in the 200 meters with a mark of 22.42. 

 

Freshman Brian Knight earned a third place finish in the high jump as he posted the sixth best mark in school history with a height of 6-06.75.  Senior Karl Kosman posted a fourth place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 15-07.00.

 

Freshman Caleb Lee won the individual title in the long jump with a distance of 23-02.75, and also finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 45-07.25.  Senior Wale Odetunde walked away with the individual title in the triple jump as he posted a distance of 48-04.00.

 

Ole Miss returns to action Jan. 9 when the Rebels take part in the Arkansas Invitational.
