12/8/2008 | Women's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following a pair of games in which she posted new career-highs, Ole Miss forward Nikki Byrd was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday.

Byrd opened the week by scoring a career-high 15 points while pulling down five rebounds in helping the Rebels to an 85-73 victory over Southeastern Louisiana.  She finished the game 5-for-8 from the field and set a new career-high with her five field goals, including her first career three-pointer.  The Brookhaven, Miss., native was also a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

She continued her stellar performance Sunday afternoon by scoring four points and grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds against sixth-ranked Texas.  Byrd also set a new career-high with two assists and tied her career-high with two blocked shots against the Longhorns.

For the week, Byrd averaged 9.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.

Her selection marks the third Rebel all-time to be named SEC Freshman of the Week.  Current sophomore Alliesha Easley earned the award twice during the 2006-07 season, while fellow sophomore Kayla Melson received the distinction once last season.

Ole Miss takes a week off from competition for final exams before returning to the court Sunday when the Rebels travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State.
