Charlottesville, Va. - Ole Miss athletics department representatives recently attended the 2008 APPLE Conference, conducted by the Center for Alcohol and Substance Education (CASE) at the University of Virginia.
Ole Miss senior athletics administrators Shannon Singletary and Derek Horne, Ready Ready program coordinator Jennifer Zimmerman and junior volleyball player Rachel Kieckhaefer presented the school's 2007 APPLE project, which displayed the success in the revision of the athletics department's alcohol, tobacco, and other drug policy.
"Ole Miss' presentation was inspiring to other campus teams as well as to the staff of the Center for Alcohol and Substance Education," said Susan Bruce, CASE and APPLE Coordinator.
"We were pleased to hear them relate their experiences in successfully applying the APPLE model at Ole Miss. It is clear that they have a commitment to student-athlete wellness and substance abuse prevention."
The focus for Ole Miss' 2008 project will be to develop and implement an educational component to inform student-athletes and staff on the effects of illegal substance abuse and encourage better choices.
The APPLE conferences are the leading national training symposiums dedicated to substance abuse prevention and health promotion for student athletes and athletics department administrators. The goal of the APPLE conference is to assist schools in promoting student athlete health and wellness by empowering teams of student athletes and administrators to create an institution-specific action plan.
