Ole Miss? Derek Horne Honored by IHL Board

JACKSON, Miss. Ole Miss' Derek Horne was distinguished by Mississippi's Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning on Friday, as the organization celebrated Black History Month by honoring university and community members who have made significant contributions to diversity.

Horne serves as Ole Miss' associate athletics director for external affairs and is in his 13th year with the administration. Among his duties, he spearheads the athletics department's correspondence and development with former letterwinners and oversees the CHAMPS Life Skills program.

A 1987 Ole Miss graduate, Horne was a four-year letterman on the Rebel basketball team from 1983 to 1986. He earned Academic All-SEC accolades as a senior and was team captain his final two seasons.

The Board's Black History Month Committee, chaired by Trustee D.E. Magee, Jr., named Dr. Sheila Davis, Professor of Nursing and Assistant Dean for Doctoral Studies in the School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the 2008 Black History Month Educator of the Year. Ora Catherine Reed, renowned pianist, singer, and cultural ambassador for Mississippi, was named the Board's 2008 Black History Month Community Honoree.
