Ole Miss Men's Golf Set To Begin Spring Season

2/7/2008 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Seeking to become a mainstay on the national scene, the Ole Miss men’s golf team begins the 2008 spring season this weekend at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.

The 54-hole tournament features 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.  The elite field includes No. 9 Duke, No. 12 Florida, No. 13 Florida State, No. 18 Wake Forest and No. 35 UAB.

The Rebels, ranked No. 20 in Golfstat, will have an experienced lineup at the tournament, with all five players having competed in most of the fall tournaments.  Leading the way is senior Kyle Ellis of Senatobia, Miss., who owns a 71.92 stroke average and ended the fall with two top-five and three top-10 finishes.  He spearheaded the Rebels to three consecutive tournament titles to conclude the fall.

Ellis will be joined by freshman Chris Mullhaupt, senior David Marino, freshman Jonathan Randolph and junior Jesse Speirs.

Mullhaupt played in four of the six tournaments in the fall, while Randolph competed in all six.  Both players earned top-five finishes.

Speirs tied for the team-lead with a 71.92 stroke average, including three top-five finishes.   Marino, a member of last year’s NCAA East Regional team, ranks third on the team with a 73.07 average.

“Our players have worked hard on preparations for this first tournament of the spring,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “This is a very strong field, and if we think we belong in the nation’s elite, this is the time to prove it.  Kyle and Chris have played very well and led us in qualifying.  I am proud of them for their attitude and leadership.”

This will be the first of two tournaments for the Rebels in February, as they will also compete in the Rio Pinar Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 25-26.  In March, the Rebels will head back to Florida for the Seminole Intercollegiate (2-4) followed by the Linger-Longer Invitational in Reynolds Plantation, Ga., March 14-16.

Fans in Mississippi will have the opportunity to catch the Rebels in action this spring, as they host the Reunion Intercollegiate April 7-8 in Madison.
