With two outs and no runners on base in the bottom of the first, Southern Miss catcher Kim Pilgrim drew a walk and was followed by back-to-back singles by Jennifer Fox and Lauren Castellvi to load the bases. Second baseman Ashlyn Harmon then lined a triple down the first base line to clear the bases and score three runs. Designated player Logan James then singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Harmon for the Golden Eagles’ fourth run of the inning.
It would be all the runs Southern Miss would need as Golden Eagle pitcher Samantha Davis (5-4) held the Rebels to three hits and no runs in 7.0 innings of work to pick up her fifth win of the year.
Sophomore Becky Nye (6-3) went the distance for the Rebels. Nye allowed four runs on four hits, but gave up no runs and only one hit after the first inning. She struck out four batters and issued four walks in 6.0 innings of work.
Senior Elizabeth Holbert singled in two at-bats, while sophomores Lauren Grill and Amber Tramp also added singles.
Ole Miss will host the Auburn Tigers (22-4, 2-1 SEC) in the conference home opener this weekend at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels trail the Tigers 24-13 in the all-time series, but have taken two-of-three from
