Goff Selected To All-SEC Second Team

3/4/2008 | Women's Basketball

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following an outstanding season as one of the league’s top post players, Lady Rebel junior center Shawn Goff was selected as a member of the All-SEC Second Team the league office announced Tuesday.

Goff, who started 26 of the 27 games in which she appeared, finished the regular season ranked first on the team and eighth in the SEC with 13.5 points per game.  She also ranked second on the team and 12th in the conference with 7.0 rebounds per game. Goff scored in double figures in all but three games this season, and finished the year second on the team with four double-doubles.  Goff also served as one of the league’s iron women as she ranked seventh in the conference with 33.33 minutes played per game.  She ended the regular season having played 35 minutes or more in 17 games and 40 minutes or more in five games.

Not only was Goff a force on the offensive end of the court, but she also served as one of the country’s top shot blockers.  The Tallahassee, Fla., native ended the regular season first in the SEC and 23rd in the nation with 2.33 blocked shots per game.  During the course of the season, Goff recorded three blocked shots or more in a total of 15 games, including a career-high six rejections in the Lady Rebels’ 65-52 win over Miami.  Her six swats against the Hurricanes were tied for the second most blocked shots by any player in the SEC this season.

Goff would go on to record 32 blocks during conference play to rank first in the league with the most blocks during league play.  In the second to last game of the regular season, Goff turned away a game-high five shots to help Ole Miss to a 70-54 road win at Alabama.  With those five rejections, Goff upped her season total to 62 blocked shots to surpass Susan Byrd for the most single season blocked shots in school history.  Byrd recorded 60 blocked shots in 33 games played during the 1993-94 season.  Following one rejection Sunday against Florida, Goff enters the SEC Tournament with 63 swats this season.

“I was pretty shocked when I found out I made the All-SEC Second Team,” Goff said.  “It’s a great recognition because it just confirms how hard I worked to get better and improve my game.  I really made a conscious effort to get better from last season and I think it showed throughout the season.”

After drawing her first start of the season in the second game of the year, Goff failed to disappoint as she turned in a career-high 23 points to lead Ole Miss to an 86-60 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.  In the following game, Goff registered her first double-double of the season as she tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 73-57 win over Alabama A&M. Goff would go on to set career-highs with 10 free throws at Kentucky and four assists against Auburn over the course of the year.

“We are extremely proud for Shawn because we all know what type of player she is,” Ole Miss head coach Renee Ladner said.  “Shawn has all the traits you would expect from an All-SEC player and we couldn’t be happier with the production she has provided us with this season.”

Goff and the Lady Rebels return to action Thursday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. when No. 8 seed Ole Miss takes on ninth-seeded Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Tournament from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn.
