Grill Hammers Two Homers, Rebels Knock Off No. 12 LSU

4/12/2008 | Softball

BATON ROUGE, La. Lauren Grill smashed a pair of three-run homers as the Ole Miss Rebels knocked off No. 12 LSU 3-1 in the second game of a double header on Saturday at Tiger Park. The Rebels fell 8-5 to LSU in the first game of the day.

Grill blasted a three-run homer off of LSU starting pitcher Cody Trahan on a full count in the top of the fifth inning in game two to propel the Rebels (18-24, 2-17 SEC) to a 3-1 win over the Tigers (32-11, 11-7 SEC). Alise Doubt singled to left to lead off the fifth and moved to third on a one-out single by Lisa Conchos. Grill then drove in both runners with a high home run to left-center field, her ninth of the year. Grill finished both games a combined 3-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, six RBI and two walks.

Doubt finished the game with a single and a run scored, while Conchos went 2-for-3 with a single, a double and a run scored.

Becky Nye (7-8) started the game for Ole Miss and pitched the complete-game victory. She allowed only one run on seven hits and struck out four batters. Nye did not issue a walk in her 7.0 innings of work.

“We played excellent in the second game,” said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson. “Ashley Dowdy made several great plays at third. We had a great relay to throw a runner out in the first. Becky Nye threw a heck of a game. She threw strikes and didn’t walk anybody. Lauren Grill came up and got the big hit that we needed.”

Jazz Jackson singled with one down in the first for the Tigers, but was thrown out at home by Alyssa McGovern attempting to score on Killian Roessner’s double to left.

Conchos doubled to right with two down in the top of the third and Grill walked to give the Rebels runners on first and second. Dowdy was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Amber Tramp popped out to end the inning.

LSU threatened in the sixth after Dee Dee Henderson singled with one out and then stole second. However, Jackson lined out to second baseman Lisa Conchos, who doubled off Henderson at second to end the inning.

In the Tiger seventh, Jackson led off with a single and later scored on Quinlan Duhon’s double to center. Duhon later move to third with two down on a fly out, but Nye settled in and struck out Tayl’r Hollis to give the Rebels the win.

Trahan (11-4) suffered the loss for the Tigers. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. She struck out six and walked three. Tiffany Garcia entered in the fifth and pitched the final 2.2 innings. She allowed one hit and struck out two batters.

Game One

Lauren Grill hammered LSU starting pitcher Dani Hofer’s 0-2 pitch over the left field wall in the sixth to drive in Courtnie Ghinaudo and Lisa Conchos and pull the Rebels within 8-5 of the Tigers, but it wasn’t enough as Ole Miss fell to LSU by the same score in game one on Saturday at Tiger Park.

Ghinaudo singled to start the Rebel sixth and moved to third on a Conchos double to left center before scoring on Grill’s homer. The long ball with Grill’s eighth of the season and she finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Ghinaudo singled and walked in four plate appearances and scored two runs.

The Rebels started the top of the first inning with a Ghinaudo walk and Grill followed with a one-out single to left to give Ole Miss runners on first and second. Ashley Dowdy popped out for the second out of the inning. Amber Tramp then grounded to Tiger third baseman Erika Sluss, but Sluss’ throw was well over the first baseman’s head and allowed Ghinaudo and Grill to score and give the Rebels an early 2-0 lead.

LSU answered in bottom half of the first after Jazz Jackson walked with one out and moved to third on back-to-back singles by Rachel Mitchell and Killian Roessner to load the bases. Quinlan Duhon hit a sac fly to center to score Jackson and cut the Ole Miss lead in half. Rebel starting pitcher Lindsey Perry then walked Sluss to load the bases again and Casey Faile tripled to right to clear the bases and stake Tigers to a 4-2 lead.

Dee Dee Henderson singled for the Tigers in the second inning and moved to second with two down in the inning. Mitchell singled back up the middle and Henderson tried to score from second, but Rebel center fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo fired a strike to home plate to gun down Henderson to end the inning.

Duhon singled with one down in the third for the Tigers and Perry walked Sluss before being relieved by Becky Nye. Nye induced Faile to fly out for the second out, but then walked Tayl’r Hollis to load the bases. However, Shannon Stein grounded out to end inning and leave the bases loaded.

LSU added two more runs in the fourth. Jessica Mouse led off the inning with a single and Jackson grounded back to Nye, who attempt to throw to second on the fielder’s choice, but the throw went into center and allowed Mouse and Jackson to score.

The Tigers scored two more runs in the fifth on a Jackson RBI single and a throwing error by Rebel catcher Amber Tramp.

Perry (6-6) took the loss for the Rebels. She went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits. Perry walked three and struck out one batter. Becky Nye entered in relief of Perry and pitched the final 3.2 innings. She allowed only one earned run on four hits and struck out one batter.

Hofer (18-5) picked up the win for LSU. She pitched a complete game and allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits. Hofer struck out eight batters and walked one.

The Rebels and Tigers will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Tiger Park.
