4/22/2008 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team, on the heels of winning the SEC Tournament Championship, moved up to No. 4 in this week’s ITA National Rankings.

The Rebels, winners of seven straight SEC West titles, downed Kentucky 4-0 in the quarterfinal round before defeating No. 8 Tennessee 4-2 in the semifinals and No. 10 Florida 4-1 in the final, to win the program’s second ever SEC Tournament Championship.

Virginia remained atop the rankings followed by Ohio State, UCLA, Ole Miss and Georgia rounding out the top five.  The rest of the top 10 includes Texas, Southern California Tennessee, Tulsa and Florida.

Ole Miss boasts four wins over teams in the top 10 and nine against Top 25 teams.

In the individual rankings, senior Erling Tveit is ranked No. 26.  Last week, he became the second player ever at Ole Miss to earn All-SEC honors all four years and then defeated the nation’s No. 2 ranked player on Sunday to clinch the championship for the Rebels.

Seniors Matthias Wellermann and Robbye Poole are ranked No. 29 and No. 53, respectively.  Together the two have teamed up to go 7-0 at No. 2 doubles in the absence of Bram ten Berge, who has been out with an injury.

Tveit and the SEC Tournament MVP, Jonas Berg, are up to No. 3 in the latest doubles rankings.  Against Tennessee, they beat the nation’s No. 6 ranked team 8-1 and are 10-3 at No. 1 doubles.

The NCAA Championship selections and 16 regional host sites will be announced Tuesday, April 29 at 1 p.m. CT on ESPNews.
