Rebel Track And Field Enjoys Success At Florida Relays

4/5/2008 | Track and Field

GAINESVILLE, Fla. The Ole Miss track and field team produced nine NCAA regional qualifying marks, five individual titles and 24 top-10 finishes to highlight weekend competition at the Pepsi Florida Relays from the University of Florida’s James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track.

The Ole Miss women’s track and field team turned in six NCAA regional marks beginning with senior Kasey McDaniel’s fifth place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 13.39.  Senior Kenyata Coleman picked up Ole Miss’ second regional mark of the afternoon as she recorded a second place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 52.54.  Also in the event, freshman LaJada Baldwin raced to a ninth place finish with her time of 54.07.

In field events, junior Brittney Reese posted NCAA regional marks and individual titles both the high jump and long jump.  She began the day with a mark of 5-10.75 in the high jump before capping her afternoon with a mark of 22-07.25 in the long jump.

During day two of the meet, sophomore Davina Orieukwu posted a fifth place finish in the shot put with an NCAA regional qualifying distance of 48-11.50.  Freshman Betty Williams also placed in the top-10 in the event as she turned in a distance of 44-04.00 en route to a 10th place finish.

Junior Marlee Kevech became the fourth Rebel to record an NCAA regional mark as she accomplished the feat in the javelin with a distance of 144-00.00 en route to a third place finish.  Fellow junior Susan Legatova collected a 10th place finish in the event as she recorded a distance of 127-01.00.

On the men’s side, senior John Yarbrough placed fourth overall, but was the top collegiate finisher, in the 110 meter hurdles with a NCAA regional time of 13.62.  His regional time of 13.62 is an improvement of his original regional mark of 13.96 he set earlier this season at the Rhodes Invitational.

Sophomore Justin Gunn won the individual crown and posted an NCAA regional mark with a distance of 25-03.25 in the long jump.

Day two of the meet saw senior Rickie Bratton finish fourth in the 200 meters by improving his NCAA regional qualifying mark with a time of 21.02.  Earlier this year, Bratton recorded a time of 21.35 in the 200 meters for his original regional qualifying time.

Junior Barnabas Kirui took home the individual crown in the 3000 meter steeplechase as he recorded a time of 9:07.02.

In addition to all the individual accomplishments, the Ole Miss men’s 4x200 meter relay posted a fourth place finish with a time of 1:25.16

The Ole Miss track and field team returns to action Saturday when the Rebels hosted the Ole Miss Invitational from the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
