Pomeranz Named SEC Freshman Of The Week

4/7/2008 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Freshman left-hander Drew Pomeranz was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Pomeranz led the Rebels to a shutout of sixth-ranked Vanderbilt in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday as the freshman southpaw pitched a career-long 7.0 scoreless innings. Pomeranz struck out seven and walked only two while allowing five hits on the afternoon. Only three batters advanced past first base in Pomeranz’s time on the mound.

The win clinched the series against the Commodores, marking the first series win over Vanderbilt for the Rebels since the 2004 season. It also put the Rebels in position to complete the sweep the first sweep of an SEC team by Ole Miss since the 2006 season when the Rebels swept Tennessee the final weekend of April.

Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday when the Rebels play host to South Alabama in the first game of a two-game set. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
