Reese Named SEC Female Field Athlete Of The Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Following an outstanding showing over the weekend in which she posted a pair of NCAA regional qualifying marks and a new school record at the Florida Relays, Ole Miss track and field junior Brittney Reese has been named the SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week the league office announced Tuesday. 

 

Reese began her weekend by winning the individual title and setting a new Ole Miss outdoor school record in the long jump with an NCAA regional mark of 22-07.25.  In addition, Reese broke the University of Florida’s Percy Beard Track long jump record of 21-08.00 set by Marion Jones in 1997, while also breaking the Florida Relays long jump record of 21-06.50 set by Esmerelda Garcia in 1981.  Her current long jump is the best in the nation this season, ranking her first in the country in the event. 

 

The Gulfport, Miss., native went on to finish in first place in the high jump with an NCAA regional mark of 5-10.75 to record the second highest outdoor mark in school history.  She currently ranks second in the SEC and fourth in the nation in the high jump. 

 

Her selection marks the second time this season in which she has been honored as SEC Female Field Athlete of the Week.  Earlier this year, Reese earned the award during the indoor season after setting a new American collegiate record and school record in the long jump with a mark of 21-09.50 at the Tyson Invitational. 

 

Reese and the Ole Miss track and field team returns to action Saturday when the Rebels host the Ole Miss Invitational from the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.
