Rebel Golfers Experience Tough Day At NCAA East Regional

5/15/2008 | Men's Golf

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. The Ole Miss men’s golf team experienced a tough day in the opening round of the NCAA East Regional Thursday, shooting a 293 in the rain at the Council Fire Golf Club. That left them in a tie for 24th among the 27 teams.

Georgia blistered the course, firing a 19-under 265 to lead Augusta State (-11) by eight.   SMU shot 276 and stands in third, Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State carded 278 and are tied for fourth.

“It was a tough day,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “It started raining just before we teed off and stopped just when we finished.  We hit so many bad drives in the rain our worst driving round all year.  If more determination will work, I know we will have it for the second round.  Our players and coaches were really disappointed with our play.”

Seniors David Marino and Kyle Ellis and freshman Jonathan Randolph all carded a 2-over 73.  Junior Jesse Speirs was 3-under through five but finished at +3 for a 74.  Freshman Johnny Delprete struggled with an 87, which did not count in the overall total for the Rebels.

Ole Miss will tee off the second round Friday morning beginning at 6:47 a.m. CT from the 10th tee, hoping to make up some ground.  The top 10 teams advance to the finals at Purdue University.
