Grill Named Second Team All-SEC
5/7/2008 | Softball
OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss sophomore Lauren Grill became the fourth player in school history to earn all-conference honors as she was named second team All-SEC by the coaches, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Grill leads the Rebels in almost every major offensive category. The Tualatin, Ore. native leads the team with a .401 batting average, 35 runs scored, 12 doubles, 12 homers, 41 RBI, a .741 slugging percentage and a .506 on-base percentage. In addition, Grill ranks in the top ten in the SEC in batting, homers, slugging, on-base percentage, total bases and walks.
"It is a tremendous honor especially with the competition in the SEC and the outstanding stats from the other players," said Ole Miss head coach Missy Dickerson."Lauren has done an amazing job for us this year and has improved from last year. She is extremely deserving of this honor."
Against the SEC, the nation's toughest conference, Grill batted .389 with five doubles, seven home runs, 20 RBI, a .778 slugging percentage and a .546 on-base percentage. In the last 34 games she is batting .456 with eight doubles, nine homers and 26 RBI. She has knocked five game-winning home runs this season against No. 9 Tennessee, No. 12 LSU, No. 21 Mississippi State, Louisville and Nebraska. She earned SEC Player of the Week honors (4/14) after batting .417 and hitting the game-winning homers against LSU and Mississippi State.
Grill's 41 RBI ranks second on the school's single-season list and her 72 RBI after just two seasons ranks third on the Rebel career list. Her 12 long balls this year is the fourth most in school history and her 26 round trippers after two years places her second in Ole Miss history behind former Rebel DeDe Justice.
Grill joins former Rebels Amanda Fine (1997,98), DeDe Justice (2003) and Stephanie Vaglica (1997) as the only players in Ole Miss history to earn All-SEC honors. Grill also becomes the first player in school history to earn both SEC All-Freshman and all-conference honors in her career.
The Rebels, making their third-straight SEC Tournament appearance, will face top seeded and national No. 1 Florida tomorrow in the opening round of the conference tournament. First pitch between Ole Miss and the Gators is set for 1:30 p.m. at Tiger Park on the campus of LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
