Ole Miss Loses Former Rebel Bobby Fisher
5/7/2008 | Football
GREENWOOD, Miss. - Bobby F. Fisher, 73, who played football for Coach John Vaught at Ole Miss, passed away Sunday, May 4, at St. Dominic's Hospital of heart failure. Fisher, a graduate of Lexington High School and a 1956 graduate of the University of Mississippi, lettered as a left end on Vaught's 1954 and 1955 teams, which won back-to-back Southeastern Conference championships. The 1954 team lost to Navy in the Sugar Bowl, while the 1955 squad defeated TCU in the Cotton Bowl. After starting out as a center at Ole Miss, Fisher moved to left end his junior season where he excelled as a pass receiver, blocker and defender. He played briefly at center in 1953, making steady progress behind a pair of holdover starters, then turned in a series of impressive performances in off-season work before going to the sidelines with a broken arm. While playing at Lexington High, Fisher was selected for All-Big Black Conference honors at center in 1951 when he served as team captain. He earned four prep letters as a halfback, guard and center, while also picking up three basketball letters and one in baseball. Fisher coached high school football at Liberty and Drew, and then worked in the Greenwood School System in administration from 1970 to 1973. He was in real estate investments most of his life. A member of the North Greenwood Baptist Church, Fisher enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play sports. One of his grandsons, Martin Fisher, is currently a redshirt freshman kicker at Ole Miss. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at North Greenwood Baptist Church, with burial at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lexington.
