6/1/2008 | Women's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. Rising senior Rachel Ingram of the Ole Miss women’s golf team will begin competing in the 93rd Women’s Southern Amateur Golf Championship Monday at the Clubs of Kingwood, Island Course in Kingwood, Texas.

The Women’s Southern Golf Association is comprised of the 15 southern states plus the District of Columbia.  The amateur is held each year in late spring.

Last year’s champion, Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, Texas and a member of the University of Arkansas team, will not be defending her title this year because she has been in Scotland representing the United States in this year’s Curtis Cup matches.  This year’s field features over 30 collegiate golfers from as far away as the University of Virginia.  The University of Texas, Texas A&M, SMU, TCU, Baylor and Texas-Pan American are all represented in this tournament.

Ingram, a native of Jonesborough, Tenn., will tee off at 8:42 a.m.   Monday will consist of 18 holes of qualifying stroke play. The low 32 will advance to the Championship Flight, which features match play Tuesday-Friday
