OXFORD, Miss. Six Ole Miss student-athletes, Carmia Carroll, Sirdonea Davis, Daverin Geralds, Barnabas Kirui, Wale Odetunde and Preethi Subramanian, were honored as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by the journal Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, it was announced on Tuesday.

Carroll, a senior on the women’s track and field team, and Subramanian, a senior on the women’s tennis team, were both national first-team selections. It was the third-straight selection for Subramanian, who earned first-team honors a year ago, and the second-straight award for Carroll, who was named to the fourth team last year.

Kirui and Odetunde, both juniors on the men’s track and field squad, picked up second-team honors. The selection marked the second year Odetunde has been honored, as he was a third team pick last year. Geralds, a sophomore on the Rebel football team, picked up third-team honors, while Davis, a senior on the track team, received honorable mention recognition.

Diverse established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
