Reese Finishes Second At DN Galan

7/23/2008 | Track and Field

STOCKHOLM, Sweden Former Ole Miss jumper Brittney Reese took part in her first of two preparatory meets prior to the Olympics and finished in second place in the long jump Tuesday night at the DN Galan.

Reese turned in a distance of 22-03.75 and finished behind only Naide Gomes of Portugal.  Gomes, the world indoor champion in the long jump, leaped 23-01.25 to claim the individual title.

“The travel was a real challenge for Brittney, but I think she adapted very well and continued to show she has the attributes of a champion,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker said.  “She defeated a lot of names in the women’s long jump, and that is an accomplishment in itself.  It was a great experience, as well as a new challenge for her, and she handled it exceptionally well.”

DN Galan is classified as Super Grand Prix and is part of IAAF World Athletic Tour. It has been the leading track and field meet in Sweden since it was first staged in 1967.  Today it is also the largest annual sporting event in Sweden.

It is held at the fabulous Stockholm Olympic Stadium, which was built for the 1912 Olympic Games. No less than 83 world records have been set at the stadium, far more than at any other arena world wide.

DN Galan offers a unique blend of traditional athletics in a small historic arena and a futuristic sports show with a mix of music, sound effects and the latest technology. The result is an atmosphere which has made the meet well known and highly respected all over the world.

Reese continues her preparatory meet schedule July 29th in Monaco, France.
