7/30/2008 | Men's Golf

MADISON, Miss. Former Ole Miss golfer Kyle Ellis, who completed his career with the Rebels this past May, qualified for the 108th United States Amateur Championship Tuesday. The Senatobia native carded a 70-70-140 to finish second in sectional qualifying held at Reunion Golf and Country Club.

Ellis will be making his second consecutive appearance at the U.S. Amateur, after qualifying last year. In last year’s championship, he advanced to match play (at the Olympic Club) and tied for 21st in stroke play.

With temperatures soaring to nearly 100 degrees on Tuesday, Ellis finished four back of Hudson Johnson, who plays for Vanderbilt. The sectional qualifier at Reunion Golf Club awarded two golfers the chance to compete in the nation’s premier amateur championship.

The 108th United States Amateur Championship is scheduled for Aug. 18-24 at historic Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in Pinehurst, N.C. Sponsored by the United States Golf Association (USGA), the U.S. Amateur features a 312-man field of the top amateur golfers from across the globe.

Ranked No. 19 on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses, Pinehurst No. 2 is a Donald Ross design most famous for its signature crowned greens. It has played host to three major championships in its storied history, including the U.S. Open in 1999 and 2005.
