INSIDER: Former Rebels Shine in AFL

7/31/2008 | Football

While most football fans are gearing up for the upcoming season, two former Rebels just ended their 2008 campaign. Both Shane Grice and Bobby Harris grew accustomed to success during their careers at Ole Miss, and each has continued that production in the Arena Football League, which held its ArenaBowl Championship game on Sunday.

Grice and Harris join a list of 20 former gridiron Rebels that have gone on to play in the AFL. The list includes former stars like John Darnell, Dewayne Dotson, John Fourcade, Stewart Patridge, Charles Stackhouse and Cassius Ware.

After one season at Itawamba Junior College, Grice came to Ole Miss and started 26 games for the Rebels from 1998-2000. As a senior, he helped the Rebels offensive line allow the fewest sacks in the SEC and third fewest in the nation with seven.

While he originally signed with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2001, Grice has made several different stops throughout his career.

After being cut following training camp in 2002 with the Bucs, he joined the Chicago Bears practice squad for the final two games of the season. After a stint as a starting guard in NFL Europe in 2003, he went to training camp with the Bears.

But after failing to make the squad, Grice knew he would have to find an alternative to the NFL if he hoped to continue his playing career.

In his first season with the AFL’s Georgia Force in 2004, Grice played in 11 games, recording 9.5 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. He also hauled in his first career reception, gaining six yards at Orlando.

Grice entered this season ranked eighth in Force history for games played with 39. He earned 2008 All-Arena Second Team honors, starting all 16 games on a line that allowed an AFL-low six sacks. Georgia posted a 10-6 record and manufactured a league all-time high 5,259 total yards of offense including 4,964 passing yards.

As a tackle at Ole Miss from 2001-06, Harris knew that he too had to find a way to continue his career. He appeared in 35 games during his tenure as a Rebel, including starts in all 11 games at left tackle his senior year. He joined Tre’ Stallings as the only Rebel offensive lineman to start every contest that season.

Harris earned four letters during his career as he drew 18 starting assignments over his final two campaigns. As a sophomore in 2003, he appeared in all 13 games and helped Ole Miss rank first in the SEC in scoring (34.0), passing (286.0) and total offense (433.2).

After going to training camp with the Carolina Panthers in 2007, Harris signed with the Orlando Predators as a free agent in the offseason. He started 14 games in his first season in the AFL and helped lead the Predators to a 9-7 record. Orlando ranked fifth in the league in total offense with 299.9 yards per game.
