Rebel Golfers In Fifth After Two Rounds At Carpet Capital

9/13/2008 | Men's Golf

DALTON, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team had a difficult day Saturday in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Club, shooting a 295 and falling to a tie for fifth heading into Sunday’s final round.

Freshman Joe David of Madison, Tenn., led the Rebels, posting an even-par 72.  After beginning the front nine at +3, David rallied to shoot 3-under on the back nine, including an eagle on the par-5 12th hole.

Senior Stefan Strandlund carded a second-round 73 to go with Friday’s 73.  Fellow senior Jesse Speirs, after opening with a 69, posted a 75. He went into the par-5 15th hole at 3-under, but carded a nine and then double-bogeyed the 18th for a 75.  Speirs is tied for 12th heading into the last round.

Freshman Sean Dale posted a 76, but it did not count for the total score, as Johnny Delprete tallied a 75.

“This is a very difficult and complex course,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “Our players are learning some of the intricacies of the course a little more each round.  But every time they put the pins in different spots, the course reveals more tricks.

“We didn’t finish well, and our players are a little upset about that. We are in position to have a very good tournament, but we must finish strongly and intelligently.  This course does not yield to power, but rather to precision.  We have been close to a good round each day, and we have practiced hard after each round.  It is obvious that our players really want to play well.”

The Rebels will head into the final round Sunday looking to maintain their top five position in this elite field, which includes 15 teams ranked in the preseason top 30.
