Men's Golf Ties For Eighth At Carpet Capital

9/14/2008 | Men's Golf

DALTON, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s golf team tied for eighth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate here at The Farm Club, shooting a 290-295-292877 in their first tournament of the 2008-09 campaign.

Tennessee-Chattanooga (864) held on to beat Tennessee (869) by five.  South Carolina finished third, Clemson came in fourth and Florida took fifth.   The elite field featured 15 teams in the Golfweek preseason top 30.

Senior Stefan Strandlund, playing in his first tournament for the Rebels, tied for 13th with a 73-73-71217, just one shot out of the top 10.  The Sweden native moved up 13 spots in the standings on the final day, closing with an eagle and two birdies on the last seven holes.

Jesse Speirs posted a 69-75-74218 to finish tied for 20th.  After an opening-round 75, freshman Joe David carded back-to-back 72s for a 219 and a tie for 26th.  The Rebels’ other freshman, Sean Dale, tallied a 73-76-75224 in his first tournament.

“The conditions were tougher today,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “It was windy with firm, fast greens. I was really proud of our players for hanging tough until the end.  We had four out of five players birdie number 17, which was a 460 yard par four that played 480 yards.

"I was especially proud of Stefan, who finished low for us in his first official college tournament.  Normally finishing eighth is not that great, but this is an extremely strong field.  We beat several nationally ranked teams.  We think this is a good start to build on for our next tournament and the season ahead.”

The Rebels will be back in action Sept. 22-23 at the Shoal Creek Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
