Rebel Golfers In Third After Day One At Shoal Creek

9/22/2008 | Men's Golf

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Led by junior Will Roebuck and freshman Joe David, the Ole Miss men's golf team is in third place after day one of the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Monday.

The Rebels shot a 298 in the first round and stood in eighth place, but they came back in the afternoon with a 294 for a total of 592, three back of LSU (589) and three ahead of host UAB (595) and Tulsa (595). Baylor leads the field with a 581.

Baylor and LSU were the only two teams to shoot an even-par round on a course that played tough and long.

Roebuck, playing in his first tournament since redshirting last year, is tied for seventh with a 74-71145. David carded back-to-back 73s and stands in a tie for ninth heading into the final round.

Jesse Speirs posted a 73-77150 and is tied for 21st. Sophomore Jonathan Randolph, who missed the first tournament of the season while recovering from an injury, came back from an opening 78 to shoot 73 in the second round to complete the Rebel scoring.

"It was a tough, long course today," head coach Ernest Ross said. "Our players were close to the lead, but made too many mistakes. We made too many doubles bogeys to have a good day. I was proud of Will Roebuck, who is in the top 10 after missing most of last year with a medical redshirt. I keep believing we can eliminate some of these mistakes and have a really strong finish."
