Kitts Named SEC Defensive Player Of The Week

9/29/2008 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Sophomore middle blocker Miranda Kitts has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday.

Kitts had a stellar weekend for the Rebels, helping Ole Miss to a split with South Carolina and No. 10 Florida as the Rebels defeated the Gamecocks 3-1 but fell to Florida 3-1 in a tightly contested match.

She is the first play to play on the front row to earn defensive honors this season and is the first front row player to ever earn the award from Ole Miss.

“This is quite an accomplishment for Miranda,” said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. “She has shown tremendous improvement from last season due to all her work in the spring and summer. That effort is paying off for her now. We’re very excited to see her playing at the level she’s playing and that has helped us be successful.”

The sophomore from Peyton, Colo., tallied a career-high three solo blocks against the Gamecocks to help the Rebels to the win. It was the fourth straight win over South Carolina for Ole Miss and snapped a 10-match win streak by the Gamecocks who were the hottest team in the SEC heading into the contest. Kitts also turned in a pair of service aces against South Carolina.

Kitts then followed that up with a career afternoon against Florida as she came up with a career-high 9.0 blocks including a career-high seven block assists. She also three digs, a career-high in an SEC match for the sophomore. Ole Miss out-blocked the Gators 13.0 to 7.0 in large part because of Kitts’ performance at the net.

Kitts averaged 1.62 blocks per set on the weekend, nearly triple her season average as the sophomore averaged 0.58 blocks per set entering the weekend.

The Western Division leading Rebels return to action this weekend as Ole Miss will travel to take on LSU and Georgia in a pair of matches. Friday night’s contest at LSU will begin at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
