Former Rebel Netter In Australian Open Doubles Final

1/29/2009 | Men's Tennis

MELBOURNE, Australia Former Ole Miss NCAA Doubles Champion Mahesh Bhupathi is one win away from his 11th grand slam title, as he and his partner, Mark Knowles, advanced to the Australian Open Doubles final Thursday.

The No. 3 seeded pair defeated the unseeded pair of Lukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach 6-3 6-1 in the semifinals, setting up a re-match of last year’s quarterfinal round against the No. 2 seeds, Bob and Mike Bryan of the U.S.

This marks the only grand slam for which Bhupathi has not won in men’s doubles.  He won the mixed doubles title in 2006 with Martina Hingis. Bhupathi has reached the semifinals in mixed doubles this year with fellow Indian Sania Mirza.

The men’s doubles final will take place after the women’s singles final on Saturday evening.

While at Ole Miss, Bhupathi led the Rebels to the NCAA team finals.  He became the first Rebel tennis player to win an NCAA title when he teamed with Ali Hamadeh to capture the Doubles Championship in 1995 and ended the year as the No. 1 doubles team in the nation. In addition, Bhupathi was an All-American, 1995 SEC Singles Champion and SEC Player of the Year.
