Ole Miss, MBS Hosting Blood Drive
10/1/2009 | Athletics
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Athletics Department will be holding a blood drive Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Banquet Room at the Indoor Practice Facility. All donors will receive a free T-shirt.
Ole Miss has been a steadfast supporter of Mississippi Blood Services and the hospitals and patients MBS serves. These "blood ties" have been strengthened with MBS being the sole provider of blood and blood products for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Ole Miss' medical school and teaching hospital. UMMC is home to Mississippi's only level one trauma center and the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.
"The need for blood is continuous," said Todd Sing, vice president of donor resources at MBS. "Patients needing blood are from all walks of life and face a variety of illnesses and injuries, everything from cancer to trauma to surgery. Without blood to help them, many of these people have little chance to survive."
"The Ole Miss Athletics Department is looking forward to assisting with this worthwhile effort," said Derek Horne, Ole Miss Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs. "We feel anything we can do to assist Mississippi Blood Services' efforts would truly benefit our state."
It is estimated that 95 percent of the U.S. population will need blood at some point in their lives. Volunteer blood donations provide the safest blood and the United States has the safest donor blood in the world. But of the 40 percent of the population healthy enough to donate blood, less than 10 percent donate on a regular basis.
Please help Mississippi Blood Services provide our hospital with a safe and adequate blood supply by donating blood on regular basis.
