OXFORD, Miss. - Katie Norris put down 21 kills and Caitlin Weiss added 19, but it wasn't enough for the Rebels on Friday night as Ole Miss (6-11, 0-7 SEC) fell to Mississippi State (5-13, 1-6 SEC) in a hard fought match by a score of 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 12-15).
Both Norris and Weiss tallied double-doubles on the night with 17 digs and 10 digs, respectively, to go along with the double-digit kills. Morgan Springer also added 17 digs, while Catherine Heck came up with 12 digs on the night.
"It's a disappointing loss," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We had some good attacks tonight, and we made some improvements in that part of our game. We have to take care of the little things."
The Bulldogs scored the first point of the opening set and the Rebels tied the visitors twice - at 1-1 and 2- - but the Rebels never had control of the first set. Ole Miss would stay as close as 5-4, but the Bulldogs would rattle off a run and hold the advantage down the stretch to take the first set 25-21.
The Rebels came out in the second set and fought with a renewed vigor, matching the Bulldogs point-for-point before taking a two-point edge at 9-7. The lead grew to four for the Rebels at 15-11, but the Bulldogs fought back to tie things at 15. The score was last tied at 20, before Ole Miss used a late run to even the match with a 25-22 win in the second set.
The third set was again a back-and-forth battle with neither team able to grab control of the match and hold it. With the score knotted at 17, Weiss put down a kill to give the Rebels an 18-17 lead that would hold until the end as Ole Miss claimed the third set 25-22.
The Rebels jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, holding as much as a three-point lead at 10-7 before Mississippi State would respond with its own run. With the score square at 12 all, the Bulldogs grabbed two quick scores to move into the lead. The Rebels again responded, closing the gap and taking tying things at 20, but again Mississippi State found a run and took the fourth set 25-21..
The fifth set was again a tight contest, with Ole Miss taking the early lead 3-1. The Rebels couldn't hold the lead, however, as Mississippi State again found a spark and pushed back into the lead at 8-5 when the teams switched ends of the court. Ole Miss would trim the lead to 11-10, but get no closer as the Bulldogs took the match with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.
Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels take on Alabama at 1:30 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center.
