10/14/2009 | Athletics

OXFORD, Miss. - A large number of Ole Miss student-athletes recently took time out to visit a pair of local elementary schools as part of "Reading with the Rebels", in which student-athletes give back to the community through the Ole Miss Rebel Ready program.

A total of 63 Rebels from the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, softball and rifle read to and interacted with students from kindergarten through fifth grade on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The schools included Della Davidson Elementary and Lower Lafayette Elementary.

Along with promoting good grades, hard work and doing well in school, the student-athletes enjoyed their time with the kids. In addition to reading books, acitivities also included flash cards, recess playtime, grammar help and participation in P.E. class.

Through Rebel Ready, Ole Miss student-athletes stay actively involved in both the Oxford and University communities. In addition to "Reading with the Rebels", student-athletes regularly participate in activities such as visiting patients in area hospitals, being mentors to elementary school students, visiting senior adults for "Jeopardy Night" at local retirement centers, holding several "Meet the Rebels" days throughout the year, and giving numerous talks on subjects such as drug awareness and staying in school to area students.
