Weiss Tallies Double-Double In Loss To South Carolina

10/24/2009 | Volleyball

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Senior right side hitter Caitlin Weiss tallied 14 kills and 14 digs to lead the Rebels Friday night, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss (8-13, 2-9 SEC) fell to South Carolina (12-8, 4-7 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 24-26).

The double-double was the second of the season for Weiss, who hit .195 for the match. She was the only player for Ole Miss to reach double digit kills or digs.

The Rebels snagged the first point of an early back-and-forth contest in the first set before the home-standing Gamecocks managed to push away from Ole Miss and take a 12-6 lead. The Rebels were never able to regain the lead as South Carolina held the advantage the rest of the way in a 25-17 win in the opening set.

South Carolina scored to open the second set, but Ole Miss put together a run to grab the lead. The Rebels held the advantage for most of the set before the Gamecocks chipped away and eventually evened the score at 17. South Carolina continued the run - a 7-0 scoring push - to take the lead and close out the second set 25-19 and claim a two set lead in the match.

Out of the break, the Rebels jumped on South Carolina early and moved out to a 5-0 advantage before the Gamecocks got on the board. The advantage slowly faded, however, as South Carolina whittled away at the Ole Miss lead before tying the set at 13. A Gamecock run gave the home team the lead again, but the Rebels rallied with their own run to retake the lead 22-21.

The lead flipped two more times from there before South Carolina snapped a 24-24 tie and scored two straight points to take the match with a 26-24 win in the third set.

Ole Miss will return to action on Sunday when the Rebels travel to face the 10th-ranked Florida Gators at 12:30 p.m. CT.
