Craven, Kitts Unable To Push Rebels Past Auburn

10/3/2009 | Volleyball

AUBURN, Ala. - Miranda Kitts hit .393 and put down a team-high 13 kills with six blocks to go along with 12 kills from Whitney Craven, but the performances weren't enough as Ole Miss (6-9, 0-5 SEC) fell to Auburn (10-5, 2-2 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 22-25, 23-25).

Regina Thomas also had a solid night for the Rebels, hitting .333 with eight kills and two blocks for the Rebels. Libero Morgan Springer led the back row defense with 20 digs, while Catherine Heck added 14 digs and Craven added 11 digs for a double-double.

Ole Miss had won seven straight against the Tigers, last dropping a match to Auburn in the 2004 season.

"I thought our middles did a nice job when we could get them the ball tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Our pin players need to step it up. We have to get into the gym tomorrow and keep working."

The Rebels fell behind to open the first set 4-1 and never were able to overtake Auburn as the home-standing Tigers held the advantage throughout. Ole Miss cut the lead to one at 5-4 on an Auburn attack error, but got no closer as the Tigers took the first set 25-18.

Ole Miss reversed things in the second set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead of their own and never relinquished the lead. Craven and Kitts continued to pace the Rebels as Ole Miss took the frame 25-19 to even the match heading into the break.

The third set opened with Auburn again taking the lead early, and while Ole Miss tied the match several times, the Rebels were once again never able to claim the lead in the set. Ole Miss tied things three times, the last being at eight, but Auburn claimed the third set 25-22.

The Rebels claimed the lead early in the fourth set, moving ahead of the Tigers 3-1 only to see Auburn roar back and take a 10-6 advantage. Ole Miss continued to chip away, however, tying the match at 16 on a kill from Thomas. The Rebels claimed the lead 18-17 on a kill from Kitts but the lead was short-lived as Auburn moved back into the lead. The Rebels again cut the lead to one at 24-23, but couldn't even things up as the Tigers claimed the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.

Ole Miss will continue to play on the road this weekend with a match at Georgia on Sunday. The match is set for a 12:30 p.m. start CDT.
