Rebels Fall On The Road To Georgia 3-1
10/4/2009 | Volleyball
ATHENS, Ga. - Junior middle blocker Miranda Kitts put down a team-high nine kills and added seven blocks, but it wasn't enough as Ole Miss (6-10, 0-6 SEC) fell to Georgia (11-5, 2-3 SEC) on Sunday by a score of 3-1 (14-25, 27-25, 18-25, 18-25).
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Norris also added nine kills for the Rebels, while sophomore defensive specialist Morgan Springer led the back row with 27 digs to tie her career high.
"We have to regroup and get to work for next weekend," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "It will be good to be back in the Gillom Center."
The first set opened with the two teams trading scores as each team sought an opening to press its advantage. The Bulldogs found that chance first, using a run to snap a 5-5 tie and push out to a 15-8 lead on the Rebels. Ole Miss was never able to recover, dropping the first set 25-14.
The second set again saw the home-standing Bulldogs pull out to an early three-point lead, but Ole Miss never let Georgia get too far ahead before making a run to tie things at 12. The squads traded scores from there before Georgia again moved up by three. The Rebels once again found a run in them and tied the match at 24 before moving ahead to take the second set 27-25.
Ole Miss fell behind 3-0 in the third set and never took the lead coming out of the break as Georgia took control of the set from the start. The Rebels cut the lead to one at 4-3, but got no closer as the Bulldogs moved out to a seven point lead before claiming the set 25-18.
Georgia snagged the first two points of the fourth set before the Rebels answered with a run to take a 7-4 lead on the home team. The Bulldogs closed the gap and the two teams traded scores - and the lead - before Georgia snapped a 14-14 tie to take the lead for good. The Bulldogs claimed the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Ole Miss will return home to continue SEC play next weekend with a pair of matches against Mississippi State and Alabama. The Rebels host Mississippi State at 7 p.m. on Friday before facing the Crimson Tide at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be played at the Gillom Sports Center and admission is free.
