Rebels Fall To No. 12 Kentucky 3-0

11/1/2009 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. - Freshmen Marielle Oestermeyer and Whitney Craven led the Rebels with six kills each, but the Wildcats were too much for the young Rebel team as Ole Miss (8-16, 2-12 SEC) fell to No. 12 Kentucky (22-2, 12-1 SEC) by a score of 3-0 (12-25, 15-25, 14-25) on Sunday.

Oestermeyer added 12 assists on the afternoon, while Craven came up with a team-leading 13 digs to help the Rebels, but it wasn't enough against the SEC-leading Wildcats.

The loss was the first for the Rebels at home against Kentucky since the 2005 season. Ole Miss had defeated the Wildcats at home each of the last three seasons with the last loss coming on October 30, 2005.

"We played a very good Kentucky team today and we didn't respond to their level of play," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We didn't have that same competitive attitude we had on Friday night against Tennessee. Today we kind of gave in and played to the score."

The first set was all Kentucky as the Wildcats opened up a 5-1 lead and never looked back in taking the first set from the Rebels. Ole Miss never got into a rhythm as the Rebels hit into four blocks and committed nine attack errors to hit -.032 for the set. Conversely, Kentucky committed only one attack error in claiming the 25-12 win in the first set.

The second set was again all Wildcats as Kentucky again shot out to a 5-1 lead to open the frame and held the lead throughout. Ole Miss cut the lead to one at 7-6, but couldn't overtake the Wildcats as Kentucky hit .424 for the set and claimed the frame 25-14.

Ole Miss turned the tables early in the third, claiming a 5-1 lead of their own to start things off. But, Kentucky answered with an 11-1 run to take a 12-6 lead and push Ole Miss into a timeout. The Rebels were unable to regroup from the surge and fell in the third set 25-14 to drop the match.

Ole Miss will return to action on Friday when the Rebels host the 20th-ranked LSU Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center.
