11/15/2009 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Three Rebels came up with double-digit kills, led by senior Caitlin Weiss' 15, but it wasn't enough to pick up the win as Ole Miss (8-19, 2-15 SEC) fell to rival Mississippi State (8-21, 4-14 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25).
With the win, the Bulldogs swept the season series against the Rebels after claiming a 3-2 win over Ole Miss in the first meeting in Oxford back on October 9.
Weiss' 15 kills led the Rebel offense as she also hit .233 for the match. She was joined by middle blockers Regina Thomas and Miranda Kitts who put down 13 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Both middle blockers hit above .300 for the match.
Freshman setter Marielle Oestermeyer hit .531 for the match as she put down nine kills and came up with a season-high 41 assists.
Mississippi State scored first in the opening set and took a quick two-point lead on the Rebels. Ole Miss kept pace with the Bulldogs, but weren't able to overtake the home team and called a timeout at the 16-13 mark to try to regroup. The Rebels couldn't overtake Mississippi State, but held the advantage to three before calling a second timeout down 23-20. The Bulldogs took the first set 25-21 out of the break.
The Rebels reversed the trend in the early stages of the second set, jumping out to a 13-9 lead on Mississippi State. Ole Miss maintained the advantage throughout the course of the set, taking the frame 25-19 and evening the score at a set each heading into the break.
Set three opened with Mississippi State again opening with an early lead, but the Rebels stayed close and forced the Bulldogs into a timeout as they tied the score at 12. The squads went back and forth with the scoring from there, with Ole Miss calling a timeout when Mississippi State inched out to a 20-18 lead. Ole Miss called a second timeout with the lead still in the Bulldogs' favor at 23-21, but Mississippi State was able to close out the set with a 25-22 win.
Mississippi State jumped out to as much as a five-point lead early in the fourth set, taking a 9-4 lead on the Rebels out of the gates and pushing Ole Miss into a timeout. The Rebels called a second timeout as the lead remained at five but with Mississippi State now holding a 17-12 lead. Ole Miss cut the lead to 18-16 from there, but Mississippi State again rallied and closed out the set 25-21 to win the match.
Ole Miss will return to action next weekend when the Rebels host Georgia and Auburn in a pair of weekend matches. Ole Miss and Georgia face off at 7 p.m. on Friday before the Rebels and Auburn play at 1 p.m. on Sunday in a match televised by CSS.
