Rebels Fall To Auburn 3-1 On Senior Day
11/22/2009 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore middle blocker Regina Thomas hit .500 for the second straight match and put down 14 kills, but it wasn't enough to lead the Rebels to victory on Senior Day as Ole Miss (9-20, 3-16 SEC) fell to Auburn (16-14, 8-11 SEC) by a score of 3-1 (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 23-25).
Thomas' 14 kills was a match-high, tied with Auburn's Sarah Bullock, as the middle blocker put down two blocks and also came up with two digs on the afternoon. She did not record an attack error until the fourth set and posted only two errors in the match after recording no errors on Friday night in the win over Georgia.
Freshman outside hitter Whitney Craven also tallied double-digit kills with 10 on the afternoon as the only other Rebel to hit double digits. Sophomore libero Morgan Springer came up with 11 digs on the afternoon for team-high defensively.
"This is a disappointing loss," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We weren't able to sustain our intensity throughout the match. Auburn played very well after the first set. Regina Thomas continued to do good things and played well for us this weekend."
Ole Miss came out on fire in the first set and took control of the frame early, hitting a blistering .464 for the set with 17 kills and only four attack errors. The Rebels took a 6-1 lead early on the Tigers and never relinquished the lead on the way to the 25-18 win in the first set. Thomas punished the Tigers in the first frame as she hit .857 with six kills on seven swings and no errors to help the Rebels to the strong start.
Auburn reversed the trend in the second set, pushing back at the home-standing Rebels and burning up the net with their own attack. The Tigers hit .429 in the second frame, while Ole Miss cooled off and hit only .034 for the frame with seven kills. Auburn jumped out to a 3-0 lead that would close to 5-4, but Ole Miss would never get closer as the Tigers held the lead for the duration in the 25-18 win in the second set.
The third set opened with the Tigers again storming out to a quick lead as Auburn opened up a 6-2 advantage on the Rebels out of the gates. Ole Miss would battle back to tie the set at 10, but Auburn notched two quick scores to reclaim the lead and never trailed again - though Ole Miss did come back to tie things at 20 and 23. Auburn claimed the set 25-23 after a Rebel service error and a Tiger kill snapped the 23-all tie.
Ole Miss came out firing in the fourth set, moving out to a 5-0 lead with a quick attack and maintained the advantage for most of the set. But the Tigers kept chipping away at the lead while the Rebel offense fell out of rhythm and Auburn evened the score at 18 in the frame. Auburn moved into the lead only to see the Rebels tie the score again at 20 and move back ahead before the Tigers would knot things at 23 and force Ole Miss into a timeout. An attack error and a Tiger kill out o the break decided things, however, as Auburn took the fourth set 25-23 and claimed the match.
Ole Miss will return to action on Wednesday when the Rebels host Arkansas in the final match of the season at 7 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center on campus at the University of Mississippi.
