OXFORD, Miss. - After guiding Ole Miss to the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, seniors Danielle Johnson and Hannah Weatherly have been named to the All-South Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The Rebel stars are the 31st and 32nd All-Region selections in school history. Johnson earns All-Region honors for the fourth straight year, becoming the first player in school history to hold that distinction.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Johnson also became the first Rebel to receive All-SEC honors all four years when she was named to the first team after this season. She moved from defender to the midfield this season and flourished with five goals and four assists, as well as maintaining a major role in Ole Miss' defense that ranked second in the SEC with a 0.64 goals-against average. Johnson started all 81 matches of her career, which are the fourth-most starts by a player in school history.
Weatherly received All-Region and All-SEC honors for the first time in her career after scoring nine goals this season, the most by a Rebel since Brittney Potts had 10 in 2004. The forward from Tupelo, Miss., finished second in the SEC with five game-winning goals and third in the conference with 0.53 goals per game. Her 21 career goals are tied for 10th-most in school history.
The dynamic duo helped Ole Miss to a 13-6-2 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where the Rebels dropped a 1-0 decision to Washington in the Portland Regional. They were two of three senior team captains to lead the Rebels to success in 2009, along with defender Mallory Coleman.
