Rebels Open Season At Arkansas State Kickoff Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. - The Ole Miss track and field team opened the 2009-10 season with nine individual titles to highlight competition Saturday afternoon at the Arkansas State Kickoff Classic.

Junior LaJada Baldwin captured the individual title in the 55 meters with a time of 7.02, while sophomore Kristin Bridges took fourth place with a time of 7.16. Bridges went on to claim the individual title in the 200 meters with a mark of 25.23.

The Rebels took the first three spots in the 400 meters, beginning with Sofie Persson's first place finish following her time of 55.76 to mark the fifth-fastest time in school history. Jasmine Dacus followed in second place with a time of 56.61, while Baldwin was third with a time of 56.84. Freshman Lauren Hollingsworth placed sixth in the event with a time of 58.30.

In field events, freshman Neal Tisher posted a height of 12-00.00 in the pole vault and a seventh place finish to tie for the school record in the event. Junior Rachel Jenkins won the long jump with a distance of 19-07.00, while Marci Morman took second place with a mark of 19-04.25.

Senior Davina Orieukwu won the shot put with an NCAA provisional mark of 50-00.00, and Betty Williams followed in second place with a distance of 45-01.00. Williams also placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 53-09.25.

Junior Juliana Smith captured the crown in the weight throw with a distance of 56-10.00, while freshman Jazmin Miller placed second and recorded the fifth-best mark in school history a distance of 54-11.50.

On the men's side, freshman Mike Granger recorded the fifth-fastest time in school history in the 55 meters with a time of 6.29 en route to a second place finish. Junior Lee Ellis Moore finished in second place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.02.

Barnabas Kirui won the mile run with a new course record time of 4:08.59.

Sophomore Brian Knight won the high jump with a height of 6-10.75, while fellow sophomore Caleb Lee claimed the long jump with a distance of 24-01.50.

Ole Miss returns to action Jan. 8 when the Rebels travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take part in the Arkansas Invitational.
