Ole Miss Earns Split On Day One At Getterman Classic
2/13/2009 | Softball
Junior Becky Nye (3-1) pitched her eighth career shutout, as she limited the Roadrunners of Texas-San Antonio to just four hits in 7.0 innings of work. Nye struck out five batters and allowed only one walk.
The Rebels jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. Junior Alise Doubt led off the frame with an infield single and scored on Courtnie Ghinaudo's RBI double down the left field line.
It would be the only run the Rebels would need, as Nye kept the Roadrunners in check only allowing only two runners past first base.
Ghinaudo finished the game 1-for-1 at the plate with a walk. Doubt added a single and a run scored.
Ole Miss will face Northwestern State tomorrow at 1 p.m. followed by a match up with host Baylor at 5:30 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
Game One
Ole Miss fell 3-2 to Stephen F. Austin in eight innings on Friday in the first game of the Getterman Classic hosted by Baylor.
Lady Jack designated player Ashley Struchtemeyer singled to right center in the top of the eighth and drove in Benet Higgs to give SFA a 3-2 lead. Higgs started the inning on second base in accordance with the international tie-breaker rule.
Junior Lauren Grill started the Rebel half of the eighth on second and moved to third on an Amanda Hutcheson sac bunt. However, Lady Jack starting pitcher Monika Covington struck out Lisa Conchos and Ashley Dowdy to end the game.
The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after back-to-back doubles from Hutcheson and Conchos. Hutcheson finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
The Lady Jacks answered in the top of the second when Struchtemeyer hit a two-run homer off Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry to give SFA a 2-1 lead.
Perry pitched 5.0 innings and allowed eight hits and two runs. Becky Nye suffered the loss for the Rebels after going 3.0 innings and allowing only two hits and one unearned run.
Ole Miss tied the game in the third after Alyssa McGovern singled to right to lead off the inning and moved to third on Lauren Grill's double off the center field wall. McGovern later scored on an Amanda Hutcheson sac fly to tie the game at two.
Stephen F. Austin loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth, but Perry escaped the jam after inducing a couple of ground balls that resulted in a pair of fielder's choices.
SFA threatened again in the fifth when Briani Bishop and Higgs reached on back-to-back singles with one down, but Perry retired the next two batters on a pop up and a ground out to end the inning.
Ole Miss got two runners on in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a walk and an Aly Presswood single, but Covington got shortstop Cali Overbeck to ground out to retire the side.
